Nine Months : The Alpha-Fetoprotein test
ALPHA-FETOPROTEIN (AFP) TEST
Performed between 15-20 weeks, the AFP test detects the level of alpha-fetoprotein (a protein made by your baby) in your blood. Depending on your hospital's policy this test may be offered to all women or only to older women.
High levels of AFP are associated with spina bifida whereas low levels are associated with Down's syndrome.
To achieve a diagnosis, an ultrasound scan and amniocentesis may be offered after this initial blood test.
